Peer review

I review research on drinking-water quality, water and sanitation services, groundwater contamination, household water insecurity, membrane treatment and environmental-health risks. Reviewing keeps me current on new treatment and service-delivery work, and it forces me to state a methodological concern precisely enough for an author to act on it.

Why I review

Much of the research I review examines a technology or service deployed in a resource-constrained setting and asks what changed afterward. I have worked on that problem from the implementation side, so I look closely at whether the intervention was delivered as described, whether the outcome and denominator are clear, and whether the conclusion travels beyond the data.

Peer review also keeps me current on new water-treatment and service-delivery research, and forces me to explain methodological concerns precisely enough for an author to act on them.

What I look for

A clear question. What decision or claim is the study actually trying to inform?question
A credible comparison. What would have happened without the intervention, and does the design support that comparison?comparison
Measurement that matches the claim. Was exposure, use, water quality or health measured at the point needed to support the conclusion?measurement
A denominator that remains visible. How many households, systems, samples or people were eligible, observed, lost and analyzed?denominator
Implementation detail. Was the technology installed, used, maintained and supported in a way that another team could reproduce?implementation
Uncertainty and limits. Could confounding, censoring, missing data, clustering, selection or measurement error change the interpretation?uncertainty
Conclusions that stay within the evidence. Does an association become a causal statement? Does a laboratory result become a claim about long-term field performance? Does reach become active use?conclusions
